Officials say it all started around 11:00 p.m. when they received a report from an employee of the south Subway stating that a man wearing nothing but a ski mask had entered the business. The subject had left the store by the time police arrived, but they spotted him in a red Ford Ranger. He then took off, leading officers on a pursuit that went north on First Avenue Southwest. Upon approaching Fourth Street Southwest the man lost control, striking a light pole. The driver continued back onto Fourth Street, striking a parked van and pushing it into a garage door in the 10 block of Fourth Street Southwest. The pursuit continued out of Spencer, southbound on Highway 71, east onto 390th Street, then north on County Road N-14. Shortly after crossing the Highway 18 intersection the suspect lost control. The vehicle went into the west ditch and rolled over atleast once. Officers approached the vehilce to find the suspect still inside. It was determined he had suffered injuries as a result of the crash and was taken by ambulance to Spencer Municipal Hospital.

The driver of the vehicle has been identified as 55-year-old Mathias Frank Kout of Spencer. Authorities say they’ll file charges against Kout as soon as he’s out of the hospital.

Spencer police were assisted by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Spencer Ambulance and the Dickens Fire Department.
