(Spencer)– The Spencer city council wants more time to look at a possible rule prohibiting jumping off city bridges.
The Spencer city council Monday was asked to approve a rule proposed by the Spencer Park Board that would prohibit bridge jumping. The issue came up during the last Park Board meeting when they discussed a group of teenage boys that have been jumping off the recreational bridge east of East Leach Park into the Little Sioux River.
Spencer Park Director Del Ray Bredehoft told the council they’re concerned about safety and the possibility of someone getting seriously injured. Bredehoft added he knows of a couple of people in wheel chairs because of such accidents.
One councilman, Ed Krebs, had concern over the fines that would be handed down to violators. City Attorney Don Hemphill told the council the first offense would be a 50-dollar fine…going up to a maximum of 500-dollars. He also stated the rule will only apply to bridges under control of the city through the Park Board.
Councilman Steve Waller expressed concern over enforcement of the rule, and if the Police Chief had an opinion on the matter. With that the council decided against voting on the motion until after the Public Safety Committee has a chance to talk it over. The council will consider the rule during their next meeting September 6th.
