(Ocheyedan)– A teen got a crash course in driving Monday in Ocheyedan–literally.
The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office says 14-year-old Mariana Garcia of Ocheyedan was learning how to drive when the vehicle she was operating collided with a house at 907 Main Street in Ocheyedan, owned by Don Hormel.
Garcia told authorities she was attempting to turn when her mother thought she was going too fast. Instead of hitting the brake, Garcia said she hit the gas pedal. The vehicle then left the road and headed into a yard where it struck a tree and then hit the house, only coming to stop after the vehicle was partially inside the foundation of the house. Garcia was able to back the vehicle out.
45-year-old Carolee Garcia…Mariana Garcia’s mother…was taken to the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley where she was treated for minor injuries.
Mariana Garcia was charged for not having a valid driver’s license and failure to maintain control. Carolee Garcia was cited for permitting an unauthorized minor to drive.
Damage to the house was estimated at three thousand dollars; 2,500-dollars in damage was estimated to a 1998 Ford driven by Garcia.
The mishap took place around 5:50 p.m.
