(Spirit Lake)– A Spirit Lake High School student has placed second in a national essay contest.
Liz Alspach of Spirit Lake earned a two-thousand dollar prize for receiving second place in the “My Turn” High School Essay Competition sponsored by Kaplan, Incorporated and Newsweek Magazine. Alspach’s essay describes “Life from the Tip of a Fly Rod”.
The first place prize of five thousand dollars went to a teen from Wichita, Kansas.
More than nine thousand students nationwide vied for recognition and prize money in this year’s contest, which was judged by Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Quindlen.
The contest asks students to express opinions reflecting personal experiences that have shaped their lives in original 500 to one thousand-word essays.
