E’burg Council Schedules Hearing On Gentleman’s Club

November 22, 2014

(Emmetsburg)– A public hearing will be held later this month on a proposed ordinance that would restrict sexually explicit businesses in Emmetsburg.

City Administrator John Bird says it all stems from an inquiry the city recently received from a person that wants to open a “gentleman’s” club in Emmetsburg. Bird says existing city code doesn’t have any language in it pertaining to such operations. Meeting in special session last week, the council set September 12th as the date for a public hearing on an ordinance regulating such establishments. Bird says the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission has also sent a recommendation to the council that spells out a definition of an adult enterprise business, restricting them to highway commercial areas.

Bird says neither the council or him welcome a “gentleman’s” club, but admits keeping such a business out of the town is nearly impossible due to protection under free speech.
