(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake city council Tuesday voted unanimously to close out the Hill Avenue South Project by paying the engineer an additional seven thousand dollars.
Howard R. Greene was requesting the additional payment as a result of the project running several months beyond the original completion date. The money will come from disincentive payments the city is holding against the General Contractor for not meeting the deadline.
They set October 11th as the date for a public hearing to rezone the Oaks Motel property from Highway Commercial to Multi-Family Residential. It was reported Tuesday the business is in the process of being sold.
The council unanimously adopted an amended contract with H & H Recycling of Spirit Lake reflecting an additional 558 residences that are being served since the original contract was signed. The city will be paying an additional 977 dollars a month, retroactive to September 1st.
In other business, the council approved a Subdivision Development Agreement for the Matuska Subdivision and they approved a preliminary plat for Kabele’s Subdivision, consisting of a light-industrial area on Peoria Avenue between 10th and 15th Streets east-northeast of the fairgrounds.
The council also approved architectural standards for Rick Miles Hardwood Floors in the former Well’s Paint building on Highways nine and 71 and for Neil Slater who’s building a car and pet wash on the east side of Peoria Avenue just north of the diner.
On another note, councilman Kevin Bice, a member of the city’s Public Safety Committee, recommended the council consider offering a contract to Police Chief Jeff Hanson in an effort to ensure he stays with the city in that capacity for the long-term. A citizens advisory group has made a similar recommendation, saying they’re extremely pleased with Hanson’s performance. The council will consider the recommendation at its next meeting.
