(Spencer)– Spencer residents affected by loud noises coming from a scrap metal operation aren’t happy with the city’s eforts to reduce that noise.
Residents living near Shine Brothers first addressed the city council last November seeking a noise ordinance restricting the hours Shine Brothers could run three wire choppers and a car shredder. Soon after that meeting, the council formed a “noise committee” made up of city officials, a few residents and representatives of Shine Brothers. Over the last nine months the city has been exploring the option of building a sound barrier near Shine’s property on East Park Street.
Ted Cate is a member of the noise committee and a property owner near Shine Brothers. He told the city council that the progress made the last few months isn’t enough.
Cate told the council the noise is affecting their quality of life and sending property values down. He pleaded with the council to adopt a sound ordinance.
Councilman Steve Waller suggested the council collect sample “sound ordinances” from other cities to explore their options. Mayor Renold Peteron agreed with Waller and sent the issue to the city’s Public Safety Committee.
Also, the members of the “noise committee” will meet Monday, September 26th to discuss the progress the city has made on the issue. The meeting is set for 5:20 p.m. at Spencer City Hall.
