Preliminary Indications Point To Enrollment Decrease In SL School District

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– It looks like enrollment in the Spirit Lake School District is going to be down from previous years. That’s the message Superintendent Tim Grieves had Monday evening for the school board.

Grieves emphasized that while the numbers won’t be finalized yet for a couple of weeks, it appears even less students than earlier projected are attending classes this year in the Spirit Lake School District.

Last year the district served 1,337 students. Based on preliminary figures, Grieves says it looks like that number will drop to 1,301 this school year…for a loss of 36.

Since a large part of school funding in Iowa is based on a per-student formula, Grieves says the drop in enrollment will probably come back to haunt the district in the 2006-2007 school year…the year for which those numbers will be used.
