Road Worker Killed When Fellow Worker Accidentally Backs Truck Into Her

(Spirit Lake)– A traffic flagger for Rohlin Construction was killed Thursday in Spirit Lake when a fellow worker who was backing a 1997 Mack truck accidentally struck her.

The woman, identified as 49-year-old Joyce Wachter of Akron, was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck, owned by Rohlin Construction, was being driven by 69-year-old Darryl Householder of Fenton.

The mishap took place around 3:42 p.m. at the intersection of Highways nine and 71 and Peoria Avenue. Traffic was routed around the scene for more than an hour.

Spirit Lake Police say the mishap remains under investigation.

They were assisted on the scene by the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office, Okoboji Police Department, Iowa Department of Transportation Enforcement, Iowa Highway Patrol, Lakes Regional Healthcare Ambulance, Spirit Lake First Responders and the Spirit Lake Fire Department.
