(Des Moines)– Iowa’s Consumer Advocate says he will oppose an Iowa utility company’s plans to sell the state’s only nuclear power plant to a Florida company.
Consumer Advocate John Perkins says he is asking the Iowa Utilities Board to disapprove the application by Interstate Power and Light Company to sell its share in the Duane Arnold Energy Center in Palo.
Perkins says he opposes the proposed sale because Iowa customers could end up with large rate increases. He says that is contrary to the public interest and to the interests of the utility’s customers.
Interstate Power and Light, owned by Madison, Wisconsin-based Alliant Energy Corporation, filed an application in July to sell its 70 percent interest in the 598-megawatt nuclear plant to a subsidiary of Florida Power and Light Company.
A hearing by the Iowa Utilities Board is scheduled to begin November 1st. The board says it plans to make a decision by November 30th.
