October Designated “White Cane” Month

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The month of October has been designated “White Cane” month.

Larry Huntley of Arnolds Park is a member of the local “White Cane Brigade”…who’s members are visually impaired or blind. He says they’re trying to make more people aware of the organization, which meets monthly at Homestead Housing in Spirit Lake. Huntley says they have special speakers come in that tell about the latest technology to assist the vision impaired or blind, such as electronic equipment that can help them see; computers that will read letters, books and bills; special magnifying viewers; talking books, and so on.

Huntley says many vision impaired people don’t like to admit they need help, and as a result turn down the help the “White Cane Brigade” makes available.

The next meeting of the local “White Cane Brigade” will be held Wednesday, October 19th at 1:30 p.m. at Homestead Housing in Spirit Lake. Huntley says they’re hoping to have a speaker there from the Iowa Department of the Blind.
