Fort Dodge Man Receives Suspended Sentence In Embezzling Case

November 22, 2014

(Fort Dodge)– A Fort Dodge man charged with embezzling over 43-thousand dollars from a Girl Scout group was sentenced Monday in Webster County District Court.

According to court records, 25-year-old Thomas Wilson was sentenced to 11 years probation. He will also have to pay restitution, court costs, fines and not have any law violations during his probation.

In September, Wilson pleaded guilty to ongoing criminal conduct, a class “B” felony…and first-degree theft, a class “C” felony. Wilson could have received up to 35 years in prison.

Wilson admitted to taking money while employed as the Girl Scout Council’s bookkeeper from January to December of last year. The council is seeking more than 62-thousand dollars in restitution. Webster County Attorney Tim Schott plans to file a motion for a hearing to determine restitution.

Council officials say the loss of funds forced them to charge extra fees for events and to cut back on staff hours.

The Lakota Council serves 14 counties and has about 35-hundred Girl Scouts in 250 troops.
