Spencer Council Opposes New Cleanwater Rules Proposed By DNR

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– The Spencer city council Monday went on record as being opposed to new cleanwater regulations being proposed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Governor Vilsack has been asked by state environmental officials to change the classification of rivers and streams, which could lead to tougher standards for wastewater treatment plants and other facilities that discharge into waterways.

The waste-water treatment plant in Spencer would be affected if the rules go in effect. Torresen says the Spencer wastewater treatment plant would need about 800-thousand dollars in improvements to bring it into compliance.

Torreson reminded the council the proposed changes haven’t been enacted yet. He says the DNR is still collecting data and comments.

The resolution adopted by the council Monday insists the DNR NOT approve the changes and asks the legislature to debate the issue during the upcoming session.

The resolution passed unanimously.
