Cause Of Rural Spirit Lake House Fire Remains Unknown

November 22, 2014

(Superior)– The cause of a fire Monday night that left a rural Spirit Lake family homeless remains unknown.

Superior Fire Chief Mel Wernimont says firefighters were called to the Lon and Jody Lindsay residence at 1230 290th Avenue shortly before 7:00 p.m. Upon arriving they found a portion of the two-story home and garage already engulfed. Fire departments from Terril and Spirit Lake were also contacted to help haul water to the scene.

The Lindsay’s weren’t home at the time–they had gone to town for a basketball game.

The family’s dog died in the blaze.

In a news release late this (Tues.) afternoon, David Schipper of the State Fire Marshall’s Office says a cause couldn’t be determined. He says it appears the blaze started in the upper part of the house above the garage.

The home and its contents are a total loss. Damage estimates are in excess of 200-thousand dollars. The family did have insurance, but lost everything they owned in the blaze.

The family is receiving assistance from the Iowa Great Lakes Chapter of the American Red Cross. Relief funds have also been established for the Lindsay family at the State Bank and First Bank and Trust both in Spirit Lake.
