(Des Moines)– A proposal to lower the speed limit on the Iowa Great Lakes at night to 25 miles-per-hour is expected to go before the Iowa Natural Resource Commission at its meeting this Thursday.
The D-N-R proposal is five miles-per-hour slower than a local group had pushed for following an August hit-and-run boat crash on West Lake Okoboji that claimed the life of Perry dentist Michael Brosnahan.
A Sioux Falls man has been charged with drunken boating in the incident.
The proposal for the reduced night-time limit would have to be approved by the commission and a committee of lawmakers before becoming law. Public hearings will also be held, including one set for 7:00 p.m. January 17th at the Arnolds Park City Hall. Written comments are being accepted through January 24, 2006 at Law Enforcement Bureau, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Wallace State Office Building, Des Moines, Iowa…50319-0034.
Officials say the 25 mile-per-hour limit would be in effect from a half hour after sunset to sunrise on all Dickinson county lakes.
Currently, Lake Delhi near Manchester has a night speed limit that limits boats to 10 mile-per-hour.
