Request To Vacate Road On Big Spirit Sparks Controversy

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A request for Dickinson county to vacate a road on the northeast side of Big Spirit Lake is generating controversy.

Don and Nancy Yarns, owners of Sandbar Beach, have requested the county vacate a road in that area known as 270th Place. The road is right on the lakeshore and runs in front of some cabins at Sandbar Beach Resort. It also consists of an old restricted bridge that crosses Sandbar Slough in that same area.

The request to vacate the road has run into opposition from the Iowa Great Lakes Fishing Club. Wally Jorgenson spoke on behalf of the group at a public hearing at Tuesday’s board of supervisors meeting that had been continued from once before. Jorgenson says the road and bridge serve as an access to the lake for those wishing to fish or just look at the lake.

Jim Blum, an engineer representing the Yarns, differed, saying there is private property between the road and lake. Thusly, he says, anyone who leaves the road to get to the lakeshore is trespassing.

After further discussion, the supervisors voted to continue the hearing an additional time…to 10:00 a.m. February 7th.
