Dickinson Co. Courthouse Project Reaches Critical Juncture

(Spirit Lake)– Construction of Dickinson county’s new courthouse is about to reach a critical juncture.

Finishing touches are being put on the first phase of the new construction. The county is still planning to move into the first phase of the new building Monday, February 20th. The County Recorder will be the first office to move into the new facility that day. The County Assessor will move to temporary offices in the new building. The County Auditor will then move to the former Assessor’s building and will move into the new courthouse when phase two is complete. The Clerk of Court’s office will move into new offices in phase one of the new courthouse from Noon February 24th until Noon February 27th. The Sheriff’s Office, E-911 and Communications Center are scheduled to move ino the first phase of the new courthouse on March 1st…contingent on electronics confirmation and staff training. The County Treasurer will also be moving into the first phase of the new courthouse.

The old courthouse will be fenced off and closed to the public perhaps as early as March 2nd. Asbestos abatement is tentatively scheduled to start March 17th with demolition tentatively scheduled to begin April 2nd. Construction on the second phase of the new courthouse is tentatively set to start May 1st with completion slated for the summer of 2007.

The County Engineer, County Attorney and Department of Human Services won’t relocate until their offices are complete in the second phase of the new courthouse. They’ll continue to operate out of their current locations in the meantime. The supervisors will hold their meetings in the interim at the Dickinson County Community Building.

According to a quarterly report on the courthouse project, overall project expenses as of last month were 1.1 million dollars under budget. The report was presented at Tuesday’s board of supervisors meeting.

Anyone that has business to conduct at the Dickinson county courthouse is asked to get it taken care of by February 20th.
