Marathon Woman Charged For Lying To Clay Co. Authorities About Sexual Assault

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– Charges have been filed against a Marathon woman for allegedly lying to authorities about a sexual assault that never occurred.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says it stems from May 4th of this year when 24-year-old Christina Carter of Marathon went to the Emergency Room at Spencer Hospital wanting to report an assault. The hospital immediately contacted the Sheriff’s Office.

Carter told a deputy she stopped to assist a stranded motorist along County Road M-54 south of Highway 18. Carter claimed she was sexually assaulted by the stranded motorists after stopping.

Deputies were unable to locate the scene, even with Carter’s assistance. A medical exam of Carter turned up no evidence of a sexual assault.

Authorities say they started to question whether a sexual assault took place at all as they continued their investigation. They say Carter was interviewed several times and with the assistance of a professional polygraph examiner, Carter made a written statement admitting she fabricated the event.

Carter was arrested Friday after turning herself in at the Clay County Sheriff’s Office. She was charged with perjury…a class “D” felony; false report…a serious misdemeanor; and driving under suspension…a simple misdemeanor. Carter was booked into the Clay county jail on bond of 12,025-dollars.
