(Spirit Lake)– Requirements for graduating from Spirit Lake High School are about to get a little tougher. The school board Monday evening voted unanimously to increase the number of credits needed to graduate from 46 currently to 48. The new requirements will be phased in, effective with the class of 2010. However, students in the class of 2009 will be required to complete 48 total credits, with 46 under the old requirements and two additional credits in the core subjects of English/Language Arts, Math or Science. Students in the class of 2008 will be required to complete 47 credits.
Superintendent Tim Grieves says every school in Dickinson county has tougher standards than Spirit Lake.
The cost of putting in a low-impact, environmentally friendly parking lot at the high school has come in much higher than first thought. The board had earmarked 254-thousand dollars for the project, but the bid came in at 299-thousand. That bid has since been rejected. Grieves says they want to be environmentally friendly, but not at that kind of expense. Plans will be revamped and sent back out for new bids.
The board also voted unanimously to adopt the budget for the upcoming fiscal year. It has a tax asking of 10.94 per tousand dollars of valuation…down nearly 61 per thousand currently. The district will have a total spending authority of 11.6 million dollars as determined by the state. An increase in valuation is being attributed for the decrease in the levy.
