SL Council Approves Restroom Upgrade; Increases Tag Fees

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake city council voted four-to-one Tuesday to award a bid to make the restroom at Little League Park handicap accessible. Councilman Steve Balm voted against the $5,340-dollar project, saying it sets a precedence for other groups to come before the council with last minute funding requests. Councilman Jerry Harbst disagreed, saying the council has to weigh such requests on their own merits. Plans call for the work to get underway shortly with it to be completed in time for the first little league games of the season coming up in about a month.

The council also approved a Utility Committee recommendation to increase fees for tags to get rid of white goods and electronic items. Councilman Clyde Ihrke, who is also a Utility Committee member, says the company that picks up those items is charging the city more. The city in turn, is simply passing that additional cost on to the public in order to break even. He says it isn’t the city’s intent to make money on the service. It will now cost $15 to get rid of electronic and white goods with t.v.’s larger than 19 inches costing $30. A 10-dollar fee will be charged to dispose of mattresses.

The council also directed the Howard R. Green engineering firm to proceed with a study into the city’s sewer rates to see if adjustments may be needed to help fund the extension of sanitary sewer to a new development on the city’s southeast side. The study will cost the city five-thousand dollars.
