SL Council To Meet In Special Session On Controversial Development

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake city council has called a special meeting for Noon Friday (4/28). A proposed developer’s agreement with Neil Slater is among the items on the agenda.

Slater is proposing a 50-lot residential development on the west side of North Hill Avenue on land currently owned by Tom Underwood. The city and Slater had agreed previously on a proposal under which the city would provide materials to extend infrastructure to the site at a cost not to exceed 360-thousand dollars–the same amount the city is asking for some lakeshore property Slater wants to buy to provide lake access to the development. However Slater told the council Tuesday he’s requesting the city kick in an additional 216-thousand dollars. The council voted three-to-two to stick with the original agreement of 360-thousand.

A public hearing on the proposed sale of the public access Tuesday drew opposition from those who say the Iowa Great Lakes can’t afford to lose anymore public accesses. Rob Hinn, a developer realtor representing Slater, told the council many people don’t even know the public access is there. He added the city and it’s residents stand to benefit a lot through the additional tax base the development would generate.

The council deferred action on the possible sale of the access to its meeting May 9th.
