Canoe Recovered In Little Sioux Near Spencer

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– Clay county authorities have recovered the canoe that went under water about two weeks ago in Spencer.

Last month, rescue crews had to pull three people out of the swollen Little Sioux River after the canoe they were in was overcome with water. The three were pulled out safely, but the canoe remained in the water.

Monday afternoon, the Spencer Communications Center received a call from the Fort Dodge Flight Service who reported seeing an overturned canoe about a half mile east of the M-50 beltway.

The Dickens Fire and Rescue and the Arnolds Park-Okoboji Underwater Search and Rescue team were both called in to assist the Clay County Sheriff’s Office. Also, a plane piloted by Spencer resident Tim Steffan searched the area by air.

Eventually it was determined the canoe was from the incident last month, and just surfaced.

Clay County Sheriff Randy Krukow reminds residents to stay away from streams and rivers until the flooding is over. He says the strong current combined with submerged trees can be a disaster waiting to happen.
