Osceola Co. Sheep Farmer Won’t Be Charged For Improperly Disposing Dead Sheep

November 22, 2014

(Ocheyedan)– Officials say a northwest Iowa sheep farmer investigated for possible animal neglect won’t be charged.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says Leroy Bernier of Ocheyedan was trying to dispose of dead sheep at his farm. The D-N-R discovered violations in the process, and told him to fix the problem.

Last month, Osceola County sheriff’s deputies went to Bernier’s farm, where they found 200 dead sheep.

Officials say the sheep had been dead too long to determine a cause of death.

A veterinarian says because of the extreme weather, Bernier couldn’t properly dispose of the carcasses. He recommended that the D-N-R check to make sure the farmer complied with the D-N-R disposal rules.
