Dickinson Supervisors Vote To Contribute Money Toward Another County’s Legal Bills

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Saying the case could set a precedence for other counties, including Dickinson, the board of supervisors voted three-to-one Tuesday to contribute two-thousand dollars to help Washington county pay legal bills in a lawsuit against a railroad.

Supervisor Paul Johnson cast the dissenting vote. Supervisor Pam Jordan was absent.

Washington county filed suit in federal court against the Iowa, Chicago and Eastern Railroad, claiming the railroad wasn’t keeping overpasses and crossings in good repair.

Washington county prevailed in the case. The railroad appealed to the Eighth U-S Circuit Court of Appeals, which also sided with the county.

Washington county is requesting two-thousand dollars from every county in the state to help pay its legal bills in the case.
