(Spirit Lake)– It was seven degrees below zero this (Thursday) morning in Spirit Lake. If you think that’s cold, Meteorologist Shawn Liebel of the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls says we haven’t seen anything yet.
Liebel says a series of arctic fronts will blast their way into the region over the next several days.
The first will plow through this (Thursday) evening…bringing bitterly cold air, gusty northwest winds and light snow. Liebel says the strong wind, combined with any snow that falls, will cause low visibility in open areas with blowing snow. Wind chills late tonight (Thursday) into early Friday will be brutal…dropping to 20 to 35 degrees below zero. Actual air temperatures by Friday morning will be around five below. Daytime highs Friday will struggle into the single digits above zero.
An even colder, Siberian airmass will move in Friday night. Overnight lows will be in the teens below zero with daytime highs not even getting above zero. Overnight lows could hit 20 below (actual air temperature) by Tuesday morning.
Liebel says a slight moderation in temperatures can be expected late in the upcoming week.
