Rural Hartley Man Injured In Accident May Face Charges

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– A rural Hartley man who was injured in a single-vehicle mishap Saturday could face charges.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says it received a report of a one-vehicle accident with injuries around 4:20 p.m. on 350th Street near Everly.

Upon arriving a deputy discovered a vehicle stopped on a barbed wire fence. The driver was identified as 53-year-old Kenneth Spoo of rural Hartley. Spoo was taken by ambulance to Spencer Hospital and was later life-flighted to a Sioux Falls hospital with undisclosed injuries.

Authorities say Spoo was westbound when he crossed the centerline and went into the west ditch where he struck a utility pole and a barbed wire fence, knocking out power to some nearby homes.

Upon investigating deputies determined Spoo had allegedly been using illegal substances. A search warrant was executed on Spoo’s residence that allegedly turned up some drug paraphernalia.

Officials say the case remains under investigation and criminal and traffic charges are expected to be filed.
