Dickinson Co. Supervisors Approve Funding Request On Split Vote

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– On a three-to-two vote, the Dickinson county board of supervisors Tuesday voted to contribute 2,500-dollars to a recent planning session the Lakes Community Land Trust hosted. The session was centered around a proposal to revitalize a Spirit Lake neighborhood in the area of the courthouse and Iowa Lakes Community College.

Supervisor Paul Johnson cast one of the no votes, saying he has a hard time justifying the county getting involved in something he says would only benefit the city of Spirit Lake.

Fellow supervisor Pam Jordan differed with Johnson, saying the entire county benefits by such projects. She says it demonstrates a spirit of cooperation in a time when some are calling on a consolidation of services in the county.

In addition to Johnson, Supervisor Chairman David Gottsche also voted against the funding request.

Five thousand dollars was being requested from the county. The supervisors approved contributing half that amount–2,500 dollars. Supervisor Mardi Allen said she didn’t think the county should be contributing more than the 3,000 dollars that was contributed by the city of Spirit Lake.
