(Spirit Lake)– Spirit Lake police will soon have a new tool available to them.
The city council voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a Public Safety Committee recommendation authorizing the purchase of nine rifles for the department at a cost of 17,307-dollars. The money will come out of the city’s Local Option Sales Tax fund. Police Chief Jeff Hanson told the council officers will undergo an eight-hour training course and will be required to be certified prior to being able to carry the rifles.
The council approved an agreement with the Howard R. Green engineering firm to conduct a traffic study for a tie-in of 38th Street with Highway 71 at a cost of 10,500-dollars; they denied a request from Bill Haawkinson of Pioneer Beach Resort for relief on a water bill that was abnormally high due to a leaky pipe; and they took no action on a recommendation from the Industrial Committee to enter into an agreement with Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative to build a new speculative building in the Lakes Business Park. Under the proposal, ILEC would fund 60 percent of the 400-thousand dollar building, with the remaining 40 percent coming from the city.
Council members indicated they would consider the proposal during budget talks for the upcoming fiscal year.
