(Spencer)– A traffic stop last Thursday in rural Clay county landed two Spirit Lake men in jail–one on drug charges, the other on outstanding warrants.
The Clay County Sheriff’s office says a deputy pulled over a Chevrolet Blazer for speeding and upon investigating learned that one of the four passengers in it was wanted on a warrant. Authorities say 22-year-old Aaron Benson of Spirit Lake was wanted on two Dickinson county warrants for contempt of court and failure to pay fines on original charges of public intoxication and driving while suspended.
A deputy noticed a cigarette box with what’s alleged to be marijuana sticking out of it on the floor board of the vehicle as Benson was getting out of it. That resulted in deputies securing the other people in the vehicle while a further search was conducted. It led to them finding a larger quantity of what’s alleged to be marijuana in a camera case in the very back of the vehicle.
The driver, 22-year-old Mitchell Nordin of Spirit Lake, was then arrested and charged with possession with intent to deliver marijuana…a class “D” felony.
Both Nordin and Benson were booked into the Clay county jail. Benson was eventually turned over to the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office for the two warrants.
