Man Becomes Unconscious While Climbing ILCC Wind Tower; Later Dies

(Estherville)– Authorities say a man who became unconscious while climbing a wind tower Friday at the Estherville campus of Iowa Lakes Community College has died.

College officials say the 60-year-old student was in the middle of his climb when he became unconscious. He was give CPR immediately be Al Zeitz, Director of the program, and two students.

The student was lowered to the main level where ambulance personnel took over.

The man was transferred by ambulance to Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville were he passed away.

The man’s name is being withheld pending notification of relatives.

In a statement, College President Valerie Newhouse says college officials are very saddened over what happened. She thanks students, staff, emergency and law enforcement personnel for the rapid response and assistance.

Darin Moeller, Executive Dean of the Estherville campus, says college counselors will be on hand to offer counseling to students requesting it.

The incident happened Friday morning.
