Spencer Attorney Selected To Fill Upcoming Judgeship Vacancy

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– A Spencer attorney has been selected to become northwest Iowa’s newest Judge.

Five district judges of the 3A Judicial Sub-district have selected Spencer attorney Charles Borth to fill a vacancy created by retiring Judge Donavon Schaefer.

Judge Borth will work primarily in Clay, Cherokee and Buena Vista counties, but will have jurisdiction in all four counties of the third Judicial District as assigned by the Chief Judge.

Judge Borth will take office this coming October 1st.

District Associate Judges hear serious and aggravated misdemeanor cases, small claims, hospitalization cases as well as juvenile cases and civil suits for judgement of up to 10-thousand dollars.

District Associate Judges stand for a retention election a year after their appointment and at the end of their six-year term.

Judge-elect Borth is a partner in the law firm of Zenor, Houchins and Borth and served as the Assistant Clay County Attorney.

He graduated with honors from Drake University Law School.

Prior to working in the private sector Judge-elect Borth was employed as a judicial law clerk.
