Animal Rights Group Video Targets Spencer Hatchery (WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENTS)

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– A gruesome undercover video shot by an animal rights group at a northwest Iowa egg hatchery shows workers discarded unwanted chicks through what it says are inhumane practices.

The video shows chicks being ground up alive and other chicks falling through a sorting machine to die on the factory floor.

Chicago-based Mercy For Animals says it shot the video at Hy-Line North America’s hatchery in Spencer over a two-week period in May and June. The video was obtained Monday by the Associated Press.

In a statement, Hy-Line says it’s started an investigation “of the entire situation.”. The hatchery adds that it would have helped if it had been told about the “potential violation” immediately after it happened.
