(Lake Park)– The city of Lake Park is without a Police Chief.
Mike Ludwigs resigned from the position Wednesday evening during a special meeting of the city council.
The original intent of the meeting, as stated at the beginning of the session by City Attorney John Martin, was for the council to act on the Mayor’s recommendation to terminate the chief.
However, after reconvening in open session following a closed meeting requested by Ludwigs, Ludwigs submitted a letter of resignation to the council, which voted unanimously to accept it.
Many of the 100 or so residents that jammed the council chambers expressed opposition to the council’s action, speaking in favor of Ludwigs.
Several demanded to know exactly what it was that led up to the whole matter, questions city officials didn’t answer only to say it was due to alleged insubordination. Asked to clarify that, Martin responded the council couldn’t legally respond due to the closed session. He told the crowd the minutes of that session will remain sealed unless they would be opened during a court proceeding.
