November 22, 2014

(Ruthven)– A collision Tuesday in Ruthven involving a car and a semi sent an elderly couple to the hospital with serious injuries.

The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office says 82-year-old Lawrence Coleman of Ruthven was driving a 1997 Buick northbound on Gowrie Avenue when he collided with a 1992 Freighliner semi driven by 72-year-old John Rouse of Ayrshire who was slowing to turn into the elevator. Authorities say the car was then dragged by the semi into the Pro Co-op Elevator driveway.

Coleman and a passenger in his vehicle, 80-year-old Bernadine Coleman of Ruthven, were taken by ambulance to the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsubrg. They were then transferred to a Mason City hospital.

The car was totaled; minor damage was reported to the semi.

The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by the Ruthven and Emmetsburg ambulance crews, the Ruthven Fire Department and the Department of Criminal Investigation.
