Sioux Center Man Found Dead In Pond

November 22, 2014

(Sioux Center)– The search for a missing Sioux Center man ended on a tragic note Monday evening.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office says it started shortly after 6:30 p.m. Monday when it received a call from a man reporting his 78-year-old father missing. He reported his father had gone fishing at a pond at Sandy Hollow, a camping and fishing area two miles east of Sioux center, around 12:30 p.m. and hadn’t returned home.

Deputies and the Sioux Center Police Department arrived on the scene, along with search and rescue personnel. At about 7:50 p.m., members of the search team found the body of the missing man in about four feet of water on the northwest side of the pond.

The man was transported to the Sioux Center hospital where he was pronounced dead. He’s been identified as Peter Schouten.

Authorities say foul play is NOT suspected.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by the Sioux Center Police Department, the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office Canine Unit, the Iowa State Patrol, the Sioux Center Fire Department, Sioux Center ambulance, Sioux County Emergency Management and the Sioux County Dive Team.
