Rescuers Pull Two Men From Submerged Pickup

November 22, 2014

(Storm Lake)– A close call Monday in Buena Vista county when the driver of a pickup lost control on Highway 71 about a half mile south of the junction with Highway seven.

The Sheriff’s Office says 29-year-old Jesus Alvarado of Ankeny was northbound on Highway 71 and lost control on the ice-covered road. The vehicle went into the ditch, slid sideways and flipped over…landing on its top in the bottom of a creek.

A second vehicle with two people in it came upon the scene and discovered the crash. They walked down to the scene and discovered the cab had broken through the ice and was submerged in water. The two good samaritans, who’s names weren’t mentioned in a news release, extricated Alvarado and a passenger from the cab of the pickup, which was upside down in the water.

Both injured parties were taken up to the roadway where another vehicle had stopped and was used to keep them warm until an ambulance arrived on the scene.

Alvarado and his passenger were taken by ambulance to Buena Vista Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.

The Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by the Iowa State Patrol and the Department of Transportation.

Authorities say the crash was reported around 8:50 a.m.
