Fire Destroys House N.E. Of Spirit Lake

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– No injuries were reported in a fire that gutted a house last (Sunday) night northeast of Spirit Lake.

Spirit Lake Fire Chief David Kollasch says firefighters were called to 131 280th Avenue around 6:00 p.m. He says the house was pretty much engulfed already when firefighters arrived.

The Superior Fire Department was then called for assistance; along with the equipment truck from the Arnolds Park/Okoboji Fire Department for air.

Kollasch says firefighters finally managed to contain the blaze to the center of the home, where it’s believed to have started. He says the cause isn’t known, adding a representative of the State Fire Marshal’s Office will be on the scene later today (Monday).

No one was home at the time of the blaze. Kollasch says it was discovered by the homeowner as he was pulling into his driveway.

Firefighters were on the scene about five hours.

Kollasch adds the weather and the large amount of snow on the ground hampered firefighters efforts somewhat. He says county and state road crews had to be called to open roads that had nearly drifted shut and to put down some sand and salt on slick areas where water was being hauled.
