(Spirit Lake)– If your car is a little stiff this (Saturday) morning, or won’t start at all, thank the frigid temperatures.
The coldest airmass in years has descended upon the region, sending temperatures into a tailspin.
Previous record lows were shattered Saturday morning after temperatures dropped into the 20’s and 30’s below zero locally.
At the KUOO studios, the mercury bottomed out at -29 degrees shortly before daybreak Saturday. That was actually balmy compared to some surrounding lower-lying areas. In Estherville it was -31, and in Spencer the mercury had dropped to 34 degrees below zero.
The National Weather Service says the frigid conditions will remain in place through most of the next week or so.
