(Spirit Lake)– A young man from Spirit Lake is announcing his candidacy for the House District Six seat currently held by State Representative Mike May, who says he won’t seek re-election when his current term expires.
22-year-old Zach Whiting announced Monday he’s running as a republican.
Whiting is a 2006 graduate of Spirit Lake High School and is the son of Bryon and Cyndie Whiting of Spirit Lake. He’s currently attending Stetson University in DeLand, Florida where he’ll graduate this coming May with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science and a minor in Spanish.
He’s been active as a community volunteer and in public service.
Whiting has completed internships in the Washington, D.C. offices of U.S. Representative Steve King and the national headquarters of the Federalist Society, a conservative legal think tank.
Whiting says it’s those experiences that led to his desire to pursue a career in public service.

A local banker announced he’s running for the seat as well. Jeff Smith of Okoboji announced his candidacy last month.
