OHS, SLHS Jazz Bands Fall Short Of Qualifying For State

(Sioux City)– High honors for the Okoboji Middle School jazz band, which finished first in its class at the Northwest Iowa Bandmasters’ District Jazz Festival in Sioux City Wednesday.

The event serves as the northwest Iowa district qualifying contest for the Iowa Jazz Championships.

Other results from the Middle School competition included Sheldon in second, Anthon/Oto/Maple Valley third, Cherokee fourth and Sioux Center fifth.

The Okoboji and Spirit Lake High School jazz bands both finished third in their respective classes, leaving them open for a wild card invitation to particpate in the state jazz championships. Rankings at other contests throughout the remainder of the season will determine either receives a wild card invitation to compete.

The Okoboji High School and Middle School jazz bands, Spirit Lake High School jazz band, jazz choie and show choir next travel to Indianola where they’ll perform Saturday, February 20th.
