SL Council Holds Hearing On Newly Revamped Zoning, Subdivision Ordinances

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake city council Tuesday held a public hearing on the city’s recently updated zoning ordinance and subdivision regulations.

Terry Yarns, Chairman of the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission, told the council the updated ordinance includes some new districts such as a conservation district, suburban residential for “low density transition areas”, high density residential district for inner city or golf-development type use, and a manufactured home district.

Yarns says the updated ordinance also addresses a number of new issues facing the city, including heights, wind turbines, architectural standards, signage, adult entertainment and storage buildings.

Yarns added the newly revised ordinance is an ongoing work in progress, saying it’s subject to tweaking at any time.

Pat McNorton, Vice Chairman of the Planning and Zoning Commission, told the council their goal is to update the ordinance every five years.

Councilman Steve Balm expressed concern he has over certain provisions in the ordinance, which will be reviewed.
