Flood Insurance Currently Not Available; Even Those Eligible To Apply For It Can’t Get It

November 22, 2014

(Washington, D.C.)– With predictions of a flood this spring running rampant, officials have been advising property owners in flood prone areas to obtain flood insurance if they live in an area covered by the National Flood Insurance Program.

Now comes word that even those who are eligible to get flood insurance can’t get it due to a deadlock in congress over a bill that funds the National Flood Insurance program.

An article in Monday’s Washington Post says the National Flood Insurance Program has been put on hold due to congressional wrangling over the bill, which also includes funding for major road construction projects and national anti-drunk driving campaigns. It also would have extended unemployment benefits.

Washington insiders say they believe the deadlock over the bill will end later this week.

Meanwhile there’s concern that if it doesn’t, the inability to obtain flood insurance could also delay closings on some mortgage applications.
