Flooding Along Little Sioux Reaches “Major” Status

November 22, 2014

(Milford)– Flooding along the Little Sioux River continues to increase in magnitude.

Dickinson County Emergency Management Coordinator Mike Ehret tells KUOO news as of 7:00 a.m. this (Wednesday 3/17) morning, the Little Sioux River west of Milford had risen to 16.34 feet. Flood stage at that location is 12 feet. Major flooding takes place at that site when the stage reaches 16 feet. The river continues to rise, with a possible crest sometime this weekend. That’s dependent on any additional precipitation that may fall.

Several gravel roads in the area of the Little Sioux are already closed to traffic, including 180th Street in Lakeville Township between 170th Avenue and 190th Avenue; 190th Avenue in Diamond Lake Township between 110th Street and 120th Street; and 110th Avenue in West Port Township between County Road A34 (220th Street) and 210th Street. In addition, Ehret says they’re closely monitoring 170th Avenue just off of Highway Nine where water is approaching the roadway.

Ehret warns motorists not to drive around barricades or to try to drive through areas with water over them. He says you have no way to tell for certain how deep it is just by looking at it.
