Van Collides With Grain Wagon; One Person Killed

November 22, 2014

(Orange City)– A collision Friday in Sioux county involving a grain wagon and a RIDES van claimed the life of one of the van’s passengers.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office says 70-year-old Ronald Korthals of George was driving a 2007 Chrysler Town and Country van when he collided with the rear of a grain wagon being pulled by a 2005 AGCO tractor driven by 71-year-old Stan DeHaan of rural Orange City.

The van, owned by the Regional Transit Authority in Spencer, was transporting 83-year-old Bernard Bakker and 64-year-old Barbara Nielsen from Hull to a dialysis center in Hospers.

DeHaan wasn’t injured; Korthals and Bakker were transported to the Orange City hospital where they were treated for their injuries.

Nielsen, who was in a wheelchair at the time of the accident, was also transported to the Orange City hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Five thousand dollars in damage was estimated to the grain wagon and an estimated $1,500 worth of corn was spilled into a ditch. The van sustained an estimated $8,000 in damage.

Authorities say the collision remains under investigation.

The collision took place around 11:30 a.m. Friday about a mile west of Hospers.
