November 22, 2014

(Estherville)– Estherville police say two men face charges in connection with an altercation that took place early Sunday at a house party in Estherville.

Police say they were notified of the incident after being called to Avera Holy Family Hospital regarding a man who was in the emergency room there with a knife wound. Officers spoke with the victim, identified as Jason Benson, who told them he had been involved in an altercation with 21-year-old Paul Kuerbitz.

Upon further investigation, police learned Kuerbitz allegedly drew a knife during the altercation and cut Benson. Police say Benson in turn allegedly struck Kuerbitz in the head with a closed fist while holding him down.

Kuerbitz was charged with one count of willful injury…a class “C” felony. He appeared before a magistrate and was held on a $7,500 cash or surety bond.

Benson was charged with serious assault…a simple misdemeanor. He was cited and released.
