Sheldon Man Convicted On Federal Firearms Charges

November 22, 2014

(Sioux City)– A Sheldon man has been convicted of federal firearms charges by a jury in U.S. District Court.

62-year-old Tony Hulstein of Sheldon was found guilty on one count of dealing firearms without a license and four counts of traveling in interstate commerce to deal firearms. The verdict was returned following about three hours of deliberations.

Evidence at trial showed Hulstein obtained and disposed of more than 800 guns over about a year and-a-half and that he was in possession of more than 100 at the time of his arrest. Hulstein also traveled to Michigan three times and Texas once to acquire firearms for unlicensed dealing.

Sentencing will be held once a pre-sentence report is completed. He faces a maximum of 10 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine and up to three years of supervised release.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives, Sheldon Police Department and the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office.
