Farm Implement Collides With Power Pole, Bringing Down Live Power Lines; Drive Escapes Injury

November 22, 2014

(Milford)– There were some tense moments late Thursday afternoon when a farm implement collided with a power pole and brought down some live electrical lines on top of it south of Milford.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office says Corey Hurdley of Sanborn was driving a John Deere sprayer with booms on the side when he collided with a high line pole, breaking it off, causing live power lines to come down on top of the cab. Hurdley stayed in the cab until crews with Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative arrived to shut off the power and remove the lines. Hurdley then got out of the cab safely and no injuries were reported.

The incident took place around 4:00 p.m. in a field in the 2300 block of 230th Street just west of 240th Avenue.

Officials say it serves as reminder that if you’re caught in an incident in which live power lines are making contact with your vehicle, to remain in the vehicle until the proper authorities arrive and the power is shut off. The rubber tires between you and the ground will protect you from electrocution.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by Milford Fire and Rescue, the Milford Police Department, Lakes Regional Healthcare ambulance and Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative.
