Lyon County Pickup Vs Semi Collision Sends Three To Hospital

November 22, 2014

(Rock Rapids)—A collision Friday afternoon of a pickup and a semi at the intersection of two Lyon county roads sent three people to the hospital.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office says 20-year-old Anthony Thomas of George was driving a 1995 Dodge Ram southbound and had slowed for a stop sign at the intersection when he pulled into the path of a 2006 Peterbuilt semi driven by 75-year-old Verdell Groen of George. The impact of the collision caused Thomas’ pickup to spin. It came to rest in a ditch. The semi went into a cornfield just past the intersection.

Thomas and a passenger in his vehicle, 19-year-old Carol Thomas, were taken to Sanford Hospital in Rock Rapids. Carol Thomas was then airlifted to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls. Groen was taken by personal vehicle to Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley to be checked out.

Authorities say the collision, which took place around 1:20 p.m. Friday, is still under investigation.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the George Fire Department, George Rescue, the Iowa State Patrol and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
