Okoboji Girls Win 1st Conference Game

Okoboji picked up their second straight win on Monday night in a hard-fought 53-44 game vs George-Little Rock in Milford on Monday night. The Mustangs got up early 5-4 before Okoboji would answer with a 7-0 run to take a 12-5 lead and then would lead 18-13 at the end of the first quarter. The Pioneers were able to stretch that lead to 32-19 but GLR ended the half with four straight points to trim the lead to 32-23 at halftime. Defense was the name of the game in the third quarter as neither team could get much of an offensive flow going but Okoboji was able to build their lead to 42-28 entering the fourth quarter. The Mustangs started the final frame with a 9-1 run to trim the lead to 43-47 but Okoboji answered with back-to-back three pointers by Lydia Bunde and Lynnae Abrahamson to build the cushion back to nine at 49-40. GLR, however would not go away and cut the lead to 49-44 before four free throws by Abrahamson would ice the game for Okoboji. Abrahamson led Okoboji with 12 points while Carly Carstens added nine points and three assists, Lydia Bunde scored nine points to go with two steals, and Ava Packebush would chip in with eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Freshman Lindsay Haken led GLR with 22 points, and Wyleigh Steenhooven added 10 points. Okoboji improves to 2-6 on the season while GLR falls to 2-5. Okoboji will head to Boyden-Hull on Tuesday night before heading into Christmas Break.

Quotes from John Adams
“That was a battle tonight; give GLR credit, they would not go away and kept the pressure on us. It’s great to get another win, and this was another total team effort. Lynnae had a great second half and Lydia did a great job for us off the bench. We had to go to a zone some tonight because of foul trouble, and the matchup trouble we had with Haken, who is a heck of a player, and I was really proud of how the girls responded to that change. We held them without a basket in the second quarter but couldn’t put them away due to fouling too much. We’ll definitely work on cleaning that up, but all in all, I was very pleased with how we guarded.”
