Spirit Lake had outscored its opponents 34-2 in solidifying
three straight wins, however, Wednesday at Western Christian, the Wolfpack would
complete a season sweep of the Indians with a 6-0 shutout. The loss puts Spirit Lake
at 2-6 in the Lakes Conference, with a non-league outing at
Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire set for Thursday.
An eleven-run inning that saw 15 batters step to the plate
propelled Emmetsburg to a lopsided 25-3 thrashing of Storm Lake
in four innings Wednesday. That second inning was followed by a twelve-run
third. Aly Berven was 4-for-4 with four runs scored and three driven in, while
Ashton Connelly tallied four RBI. Faith Schmidt took the win, pitching a
scoreless first inning. The E-Hawks, winners of eight straight, are 5-2 in the
conference and play in the Ft. Dodge
Tournament this weekend.
Spencer’s Carly Richardson threw a four-inning no-hitter
that ended with the Tigers taking a 13-0 decision over Cherokee. Richardson recorded three
strikeouts in the win. Spencer boasts a 5-2 league record and will have a tough
test Thursday at No. 1-ranked North Union.
In the Siouxland, Sibley-Ocheyedan took a 14-3 setback against
Central Lyon/George-Little Rock. The Generals have lost six consecutive and
drop to 2-6 in the conference. They travel to Sioux Center
this evening. And MOC-Floyd Valley snuck by West Lyon,
7-6. Okoboji’s home contest against Sioux
Center was postponed as a
result of wet conditions and will be made up on June 28.
Over in the War Eagle, rivals South O’Brien and
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn squared off in Paullina, where the Wolverines took a 7-5
victory. Both teams finished with eight hits in the game, which saw South
O’Brien score all of their runs in the first three innings. The loss ends a
four-game winning streak for the Hawks, and puts their league record at 4-7.
They host top-ranked Akron-Westfield on Friday.
